PARAMARIBO, Suriname, Dec 6, 2021 – PPG (NYSE; PPG) today announced the completion of a COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® project to build a community center for residents in Winti Wai, Suriname. The project brought together more than 20 PPG volunteers who partnered with the local Stiwewa Association.
PPG donated $50,000 for the construction of the facility and provided more than 110 gallons (420 liters) of HISTOREX™ paint by PPG to beautify the building. The interior and exterior were decorated with colorful murals designed by local artist Fabian de Randamie to motivate the local community. The mural on the outside wall was inspired by local children playing soccer and includes the motto “Have a goal and go for it.”
“With this building, we can provide maximum social support and help residents in a more targeted way,” said Robbie Berghout, Stiwewa Association chairman. “There is finally a place for activities that is easily accessible for all residents. We will pay special attention to the development of young people in the neighborhood by providing information, education and labor development, tackling social problems, and offering recreation and fun.”
The Stiwewa Association’s goal for the center is to support the residents of Winti Wai, including more than 1,600 students, so they have a better quality of life with more opportunities for the future. Planned activities include information meetings on topics such as personal budgeting, parenting, crime prevention, health, addiction and poverty reduction. There will be training courses and workshops on topics that include work, entrepreneurship, basic life skills and creative activities, such as song and dance. Homework-support projects, which have resulted in higher success rates for students, also will be offered.
“It’s a great honor to be involved in such a worthwhile project,” said Feeanine Hewitt-Abrahams, PPG marketing officer, Suriname. “The project was certainly not easy, with permitting delays and COVID-19 lockdowns that delayed construction. But it has been worth all the effort, and we look forward to seeing the benefits that this facility can bring to the residents of Winti Wai.”
